Zanzibar Gem: The Ultimate Indoor Plant for Beginners
The humble Zanzibar Gem (a.k.a. ZZ Plant or Zamioculcas Zamiifolia) is famed for its ability to "thrive on neglect".
In fact, this unique, glossy beauty really doesn’t need much to shine, making this the perfect plant pal for busy babes and beginner plant parents alike.
Let’s take a look at what makes the Zanzibar Gem so great:
Get to know the Zanzibar Gem:
The zesty little Zanzibar Gem is a tropical plant native to eastern Africa. A member of the aroid family (making it a cousin to Philodendrons, Monstera & Devil’s Ivy), the ZZ Plant has a unique appearance with glossy, dark green leaves that grow from long stems.
This clever little indoor plant uses her rhizomes (little potato shaped growths under the soil) to store water during times of drought, allowing her to stay hydrated longer than the regular houseplant.
Why is the Zanzibar Gem perfect for beginners?
If you’re a new plant parent or have suffered from a black thumb, the Zanzibar Gem makes the perfect starter plant to get you on your plant parenthood journey. And here’s 4 reasons why:
1. It doesn't require much light
The Zanzibar Gem can grow in low light conditions, making it a perfect choice for indoor spaces with limited sunlight, or for plant parents who are still a little unsure on what “bright, indirect light” even means.
2. It's drought-tolerant
This plant can go for weeks without water, making it ideal for those who may forget to water their plants.
3. It's pest-resistant
The ZZ plant is not attractive to common indoor plant pests, so you won't have to worry about dealing with infestations.
4. It's air-purifying
Like many other indoor plants, the Zanzibar Gem can help improve air quality by removing harmful toxins from the air.
How to care for your Zanzibar Gem
While the Zanzibar Gem is one of the lowest-maintenance houseplants around, there are still a few things you can do to ensure it thrives in your indoor space:
1. Water sparingly
Only water your ZZ plant when the soil is completely dry to the touch (pro-tip: use a moisture meter to test the soil at all depths)
2. Avoid direct sunlight
Be sure to keep the Zanzibar Gem out of any direct rays, otherwise it may scorch their leaves. All other indoor light levels will be just fine.
3. Keep in a warm environment
It’s best to keep the tropical ZZ Gem away from any draughty windows or air-conditioning units
4. Keep them fertilised
Encourage growth and keep them happy with a regular dose of indoor plant food. We recommend We The Wild Support slow release fertilizer for Zanzibar Gem plants since they don’t need to be watered as often as other indoor plants.
